Tribute to DangerMouse

So I have been listening to a lot of DangerMouse productions of late. In doing so it has become more and more apparent with each new track I hear that he has the miners touch, everything he touches turns to gold. Brian Burton the kid who shadowed behind his heroic cartoon mouse alias, nervously masking his identity by performing in a mouse suit could not escape the lime light for too long. Although Burton's first release's were met with praise by critics it was his bootleg release the Grey Album, a mash up of the Beatles White and Jay-Z's Black album that hype was cast upon on his potential. The Grey Album left such an impression that Rolling Stone Magazine labeled it "the ultimate remix record". Another one of music's icon's drawn to his latest production exploits was Blur's front man Damon Albarn who enlisted him to produce Albarn's side project, the Gorillaz's second album, Demon Days. Such was the success of this partnership, old mate Brian was able to secure himself a Grammy award as producer of the year. Since then he's gone from strength to strength, working with and creating new household names such as Gnarles Barkly, DangerDoom, The Black Keys, Broken Bells, Beck,  Jokers Daughter and many more tasty morsels. I've thrown together a few tracks that he's had something to do with and I believe are worth a listen. So sit back, relax and enjoy some quality shiz.

mp3: Gnarls Barkly - Crazy

mp3: Gorillaz - Dare

mp3: Beck - Gamma Ray

mp3: DangerDoom - Sofa King

mp3: Joker's Daughter - Last Laugh Sorry could only get a link to the full album not a particular track, although the whole album is worth a look as are all of these artists tracks!

well here's a few to get your juices flowing anyways.

-*- New Disco/Funk Mix -*-

Yo I haven't posted anything for a while, so i thought I'd kick it off with a new mix I recently completed. In this mix I've incorporated elements of old school funk and disco, something I've never tried before. Give it a listen anyway, its a bit of fun I reckon.

Miles' Attempted Props On 3SSR.

So as you may know I just put out an old school electro Minimix, in an attempt to relive some of the moments I have enjoyed over the last couple of years. My good friend Miles runs a radio show with his buddy Ice man on the Swinburne Radio 3SSR, they generally play a variety of genres but decidedly more rock based music. Miles after listening to mix decides he shall give me a shout out and a bit of air time on his next show. So i check out the podcast of the show and in the last ten minutes of the show he starts ranting about me and my blog and proceeds to play a portion of my "new mix". In true halirious Miles fashion he plays a track that doesn't even remotely resemble my mix and cuts it after about 30 seconds, ridiculous haha! Any way here is the podcast because it is worth a listen as there's some pretty cool local and international bands that I've never heard of and found pretty interesting. Tune in for a lesson or two in Folk Punk and Miles' jibba jabba!

Them Ranga's had what was coming!

M.I.A came out with a new single a little while ago and the accompanying video has received quite a bit of criticism aimed at its ultra violent content in which red headed men and children are kidnapped and murdered. One of the actors claims that the movie is an attempt to highlight the issues of genocide, "I think she was trying to show violence to end violence". I have more cynical view, MIA simply doesn't like Ranga's haha. I say fuck those critics on their high horses, the beauty of art is in the freedom of expression.

A mini mix by yours truely... Download and Listen!

Hey so here's a mini mix I put together the other day. Track selection was just a few of the bangers I've enjoyed over the last couple of years. I hope it brings back a few memories for some of you.

Sur5ivor (real poor i know, just trying to stick with 5 theme)

So last week I was in one of my usual sloth worthy moods, surfing the net watching the finest of youtube when I suddenly realised I know very little about how House music came to fruition. So for the next, oh 150 minutes, i watched a fifteen part doco 'The History of House Music'. If you have any interest in the whole 'House' music thing then I strongly suggest having a look. For me it was particularly significant as it helped me remember my origins of House music and electronica in general, who I have my sister and her old boyfriend Raf to thank.

Forming in 1989, the London based duo Leftfield were to become pioneer's in the Dance industry, bringing together a hybrid of House, Reggae and Dub while being among the first to incorporate vocals from guest artists. The duo have been often been mentioned in the same breath as electro legends Underworld and The Chemical Brothers, this puts it into perspective just how highly regarded these guys really are. Their first album Leftfield - Leftism was given to me at around the age of 14 and was to accompany me for many years. I'm gunna post their signature track of the album along with a link for the whole album as its a great listen.

Also at the age of 14 I was lucky enough to discover Drum n Bass through the theft of a burnt compilation Cd (thanks and sorry). It can be honestly said that since this Cd I have not found any other DnB I would rather listen to. Long a ago I lost the original Cd but the digital format has seemed to following me from computer to computer as I they have been inhabited by me over time. It is for this reason I feel I should share one of the tracks from the the comp, unfortunately I have no track names which sucks. Oh and if you like, ask and ill upload the whole Cd, cheers.

If were on the topic of influential house figures then I guess its only fitting to chuck a bit of Carl Cox into the mix. I think most people know who "the Three Deck Wizard" is and if ya don't then find out. He's been Deejaying since the mid 80's and has played at pretty much every major event since. Here's an edit of a track which one suspects ripped the base line from Donna Summer's - I Feel Love, which is a truly is a spectacle in its self.

Right, now for some new school shiz, these guys need no intro (check previous blog). Thats right the unstoppable Zombie Disco Squad, seem to be, well unstoppable when it comes to producing bangers, this track being now exception. Get around it, cos its good and stuff.

Right click to download: Idiotproof - Gorilla (Zombie Disco Squad Add Acapella Here Edit)

Last, one from me main main Jesse Rose.  After producing his hit debut album 'What do you do if you don't', which gave birth to countless classics, he's back with another fine tune. At the age of 14 Jesse Rose had ran his own club night with one of his first Deejays on the bill being none other then Sugar Daddy from Groove Amarda. He made his name by bringing the original influences of Chicago House and early Detroit Techno to the wheels of steel. Jesse was brought up listening to Motown Soul, Jazz and eighties funk, with the latter being quite evident is this particular track.

If there are people that actually read this blog (chance theres not haha) and would like to share their own first 'House' music experiences/tracks or in fact any memorable tracks post a comment. I would be interested to hear.

Oh and one last thing, Im gunna put this up cos its awesome.

Can it be my De La Clothes, or is it just my De La Soul?

Had to post this vid as it reminds of how legit old school hip hop was, De La Soul being the prime example. I have been listening to this track weekly for years and years and I never get sick of it, along with the majority of De La's other material.

Watch!

Uno Dos Tres Cuatro Cinco

I haven't really gotten into a great deal of Dub step but as the genre diversifies I seem to be enjoying it more and more. I honestly know very little about Midnight conspiracy, I do know that they've done a fantastic job on this remix. Taking the original which in my opinion is already a great track and transforming it into something completely different, while at the same time managing to make use of a lot of the original samples.

Click to download: Esser-Headlock(Midnight Conspiracy Dubstep Remix)

Ok so normally I add original tracks or remix's but today Im gunna give you a treat and give you a full mash up set to listen to. Im not sure whether this guy has been discovered by many. I stumbled upon him through a random link on facebook. Dan McCarthy, Aka Mumbles is a Brisbane based Dj/producer that has put together a sick little hip hop mix. From what I can gather he is an unsigned artist but I suggest keeping an eye out for him because he definitely seems to put together a solid mix or two.

This post is dedicated to my pet pig Frewston, who loves the song of which Douster's samples derive from, none other then the famed Lion King - Circle of Life. So now when your at that state of retardation on a Sunday afternoon strolling through Melbourne's finest private Zoo, Revolver, and you hear Simba's mighty roar you can justify that infant state of mind you happen to be in. The track was produced by a French Dj, Douster who made some noise in 2009 showing the world his take on anything from tribal to dance hall grooves.

Click to download: Douster - King Of Africa (Homework Edit)

Riva Star an Italian producer who just doesn't seem to stop whether it be originals or remix's they seem to be coming out of his bum. My respect grew for him immensely after reading his facebook status in reference to the Winter Music Conference in Miami "Mmmm got the feeling i ve missed the last 15 hours somewhere, can't even remember if i made it to the gig?"... loose. Well here is a well done remix of an epic classic.

I' m just putting this one up cos ya gotta love a good mashup and i thinks its a pretty fun one!

F.I.V.E.

This post was supposed to be up a week ago but was unfortunately interrupted by a weeks snowboarding in Vermont, hard life I know.

ENJOY

Dan Single Aka Dangerous Dan, a member of famed Bang Gang Dj's and Co Founder Of Tsubi Jeans seems to have it all. This track was realised a few weeks ago, has a bit of a cheesy element to it but cheesy music is always a bit of fun. Its named 'The Ritz' as it features samples from a track produced in 1929 called 'Puttin' on the Ritz', which means to dress very fashionable (just like all the super cool kids hangen out in their super cool clubs who spend vast amounts of money on "zaney" clothing that could be purchased for 50cents from an Op shop). Anyway enjoy as you've gotta love a bit of what Bang Gangs got to offer!

Right click to download: The Ritz - Dangerous Dan

Digitalism argh, just amazing! The German based duo formed in 2004, realising their debut album in 2007 which received much praise from the electronic music world and course everyone I know! This remix is a few years old but was rediscovered when asking myself "When is Digititalism's next bloody album gunna be realised?". Everything Breakbot touches turns to gold and there is no exception with this track, already a winner for me Breakbot gives this that Funk that is synonymous with his production. I Strongly suggest checking out Breakbot's new EP, Baby Im yours.

Click to download: Digitalism - Apollo Gize (Breakbot Hypnotoad Extended Remix

Zombie Dicso Squad, a duo from London who became recognised for their bangen club nights and mixtapes that circulate are impressing with their studio productions. They've been slammen out originals and a bunch of remixes, exploring and differentiating traditional Figet house. Jesse Rose himself giving props saying that their "one of the most exciting prospects".

Click to download: Jessie Rose - Heavy Still (Zombie Disco Squad Remix)

Uffie, yeah that crazy hot girl who features on anything cool, namely Justice - The Party. Well she has brought out a rad single, produced by another fellow Ed Banger'n Mr Oizo (heart him). This track just oozes of the same essences that made me fall in love with The Party, lyrics are little out of place on the slight occasion but i like the content and you cant go pass an Oizo production, enjoy!

Right click to download: Uffie - Mc's Can Kiss (original mix)

Suspicious sounding Queen's NY based disco group, Gary's Gang were around in the disco era and had a few goes in the charts but never really enjoyed huge sucess, with their best effort "Keep on Dancin" featuring in both the US and UK's charts. Any body that's a Mr Oizo fan will appreciate this track, probably one of my favourite Oizo tracks, Patrick 122 heavily samples it to make one funky banger. I think also if you add the drums of the intro of Federico Franchi - Cream, you get the start of Patrick 122. Here's all three tracks, take a listen and see what you think.

5 mo fo yo ho

Yo, as some of may know I' am currently residing in the US, so this first track fittingly was discovered at a Super Bowl house party a couple of weeks ago. Yeah the kind of cliched house parties you see in the movies, red plastic beer cups, beer pong styled drinking games, American style chicken wings and nachos, coupled with good company made it a top night! Any way back to the music, Afroman, someone I'm sure your all aware of from his hit song 'Because I got High' has another classic. The Comical based rapper released his first album in 1999 and has been churning out albums solidly ever since. This track is appropriately named after a Malt Liquor 'Colt 45', cheap and nasty, but good for a laugh.

Click to download: Afroman - Colt 45

II: The xx, a London based 3 piece who could be described as some sort indie minimal chillout consortium. These guys met at the same school as Hot Chip and Burial attended and are still quite young all in their early 20's. Last year they received considerable hype with both Rolling stone and NME heaping praise on their debut album. So hopefully more good things to come from these guys. Thanks goes to Liam for the intro to these guys.

Click to download: The xx - Crystalised

So this maybe third on my list but I think it has to be my favourite track at the moment. I enjoy this track for its heritage most all. Daphne Oram an employee of the BBC and a pioneer of electronic music and sampling started experimenting with tape recorders in the 1940's building new tracks from samples and paving the way for modern day electronic music. This track titled 'Snow' is a textbook example of how hiphop and the sampling revolution started (check out breakbeats to learn more). When listening to this track I cant help but think of all the artists that must of been influenced by Daphne, one that i personally can see alot of her in is Dj Shadow particularly his 'Entroducing' album. I urge you to read more about Daphne, as its quite interesting.

Click to download: Daphne Oram - Snow

Im gunna put this one up to0, just cos i think it also is a rad track and i think if you listen to The Avalanches track 'Paplo's Cruise' you might hear a hint of it, i think i do??

Click to download: Daphne Oram - Pulse Persephone

Apart from Trash Kit being a cool name for a band I know very little about these guys as by the sounds of it their relatively new so i will just rip what little information i could find about them from last.fm. Well enjoy and lets hope they'll get an album out soon.

"Trash kit are Rachel A, Rachel H and Ros M, from London, UK. The two Rachels also play in the Madrigals, and Ros plays in Ray Rumours. They formed in 2008.

Mixing chaos and trippy melody in equal measure, Trash Kit are as jubliant as they are focussed. Vocals tangle with each other and highly expressive drum patterns, while guitar lines make for a serious adventure into the realms of party. So far they have a CD-R, which keeps selling out at shows, and they will be working with Upset The Rhythm on a new record shortly."

5 Tracks Im diggin this week

First up a Track from Italian Dj/Producer, Alex Kenji. He's been around for the last decade hitting up clubs all round Europe, getting some recognition with his tracks featuring on mix's from the BBC1's acclaimed Essential Mix. The beat is solid Tech House, which is something im really digging at the moment, but it is really when you get midtrack and that funky brass salsa brake down comes in that you'll really appreciate this track.

Right click to download: Alex Kenji - Tropical Chicks (Original Mix)

Second of the rank, Canadian born Disco producer Gino Soccio born way back in '55, had reasonable success back in 70's/80's with entries making it into the US Hot 100. Everytime i listen to this i wish i was back in the disco days, epic vocals and just general feel goodness to this track. Even if ya dont like Disco you've gotta appreciate it, without it you there wouldnt have modern day house music etc. If you like this track, i urge you check out his others there all pretty solid disco.

Click to download: Gino Soccio - Dancer (LP version)

Tercera OpciĆ³n this guy could be called the King of pop i suppose, Prince ( who i pray you know of). This guy produced 10 platinum albums, thirty Top 40 singles, he started his own record label and wrote, self produced and played most of the instruments on his recordings. He has been a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I have just recently got into his stuff and this is a track I've found this track rather interesting because, and this is only my little theory but i think the the drums and base in the intro is what influenced Daft Punk for the intro of robot rock base and drums... have a listen, see what ya think.

Click to download: Prince - Controversy

One spot of the podium comes a band who for some reason it took me a long time to really discover them, even though I know a lot of people who have listened to them for a quite some time. Vampire Weekend formed in 2006 a New york based indie rock band by trade but with an obvious African popular music influence. I think I enjoy their music as it is has familiarity to Paul Simons album Graceland which was mostly recorded in South Africa. This track is from their recently realised album

Right click to download: Vampire Weekend - White Sky

The 5th and shit this looks exciting, Damian Marley & Nas. The two have been collaborating together and will be releasing a charity album with the proceeds going towards a project in Africa, with the possibility of a school being built in congo, which is efen amazing. "A lot of charity albums come off corny," says Marley. "We want this to be something you'd play in your car.", that sounds encouraging! What more can i say, good Hip Hop, good Reggae, giving aid to those who need it = awesome!

Stint Eastwood Himself

Stint Eastwood the man himself, I decided to theme my blog around him for a number of reasons.
I. He's a sicko
II. Clint rhymes with Stint
III. The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly... reminds me of so many of my weekends and the aftermath.
IV. Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz... a great track + one of me favourite groups.
